Dawg, try using Randmcnalley.com. Everything about it is much better than Mapquest.
I remember taking road trips with my mom down the coast and one of my favorite locations was the Oregon Vortex. http://www.oregonvortex.com/
Also, try this website: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/
A good place to look for Americana.
I also have strong memories about the Trees of Mystery in California.
Also: two books worth reading -
New Roadside America: The Modern Traveler’s Guide to the Wild and Wonderful World of America’s Tourist (Paperback) and Eccentric America, 2nd: The Bradt Travel Guide to All That’s Weird and Wacky in the USA (Bradt Travel Guide) (Paperback). Both on Amazon.com.
I think if you search for one, you can get the other book with it for a mere $23.
What? No stop in Seattle? No watching the flying fish at the Pike Place Market? No trip up the Space Needle? No stop at Cupcake Royale for a Kate? No pilgrimage to the Sci-Fi Museum? Heck, not even a stop at the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art? Dude! You don’t know what you’re missing!
I’m not good with geography. at least states geography. are you going near Arkansas? If so you should stop in at the crater of diamonds!
We went to The House on the rock when in wisconsin recently. It was very odd, but very enjoyable.
Yep - I’ve a suggestion. Come see me and the place where our boys won Olympic Gold in the greatest sports moment of all time.
hmm....if you go through Evansville Indiana there is Bosse Field where they shot a lot of A league of their own, Four Freedoms Monument, The Haunted Library, LST 325 WWII container ship. Evansville was a large ship builder during WWII and there is a floating museum there too.
I’ve always wanted to take a road trip like this! By the time you get here, you should have plenty of great stories you can share with me over lunch - or, maybe after lunch since those burgers will be keeping mouths busy. I look forward to living vicariously through you!
Um, seriously?? If you go see the Spruce Goose, let me know when you’re going to be there. I live in McMinnville....I’ll totally come visit you!
You definately have to do Seattle! I will come say hi. I guess I can come say Hi to you in Boise too!
I trust you’ll be adding Indiana to the list??? You need to come in the winter. They have the world’s largest “Christmas tree” here. Heh. http://www.indydt.com/lights.html
Yes! Call me when you get to Kansas! I would love to meet you. I can also lead you to good eats.
OMG I live 50 Miles from Bessemer,AL and I never knew Hitlers typewriter was there.
You’ve gotta add Churchill Downs to the Louisville list. It’s part of history, man! :D
There’s gotta be something in Missouri worth stopping for… the arch maybe?
I have a suggestion:
Come see me when you come to Alabama!!
You have a great foundation full of ideas for this trip, so you’re looking good so far!
How much time will you have for this road trip? I hope you have at least two weeks so that you won’t feel rushed.
Teebopop- Thanks for the RandMc tip… the site looks much better than Mapquest… and I have the Roadside America book… but I’ll get the Brandt guide… thanks!
Colleen- Ooooh! A Vortex!!! I’m feeling it!!! Thanks!
Dave- I have to see how RV friendly Seattle is. Because I want to see alot of things in America I wouldn’t be able to just jump on a plane to, I might skip major cities. Its still in the air though… especially since I’ve always wanted to see the Birthplace of Grunge that in no uncertain terms helped define the person I am today.
Lynda- I do want to see some of Route 66… although I don’t want to get “tied” to it so to speak.
Bluepaintred- Crater of sparkly jewels? I may need to check that out… I hope they let you take home samples!
Dan- Wow… that looks cool! I’ll have to add it to the list! Thanks!
Luin- I might be able to add that in… depending on which direction I start to go in. If I go Northeast before west, then it’s no problem… but if I just go west, I may have to skip it. Not too sure yet.
Da Duck- Well, since SOME people are upset I left Indianna off the list entirely (which I left quite a few states off the list) I can definitely add Evansville as a definite maybe.
Heartless- You better get the stories before… I’m getting a Quad burger… and I may not survive.
Poppy- I’m down with YOUR France any day of the week. ‘Cause that’s how I roll.
Adena- The Spruce Goose is probably definitely going to be a stop… but I’ll firm up all the stops later this year and then start figuring out who lives nearby for some lunch/cereal.
Melanie- Seattle is looking more and more tempting…
Heather- I need to find something in Ohio… got a link to the world’s largest basket?
Monique- Well… this is a summer trip plan… but maybe I’ll come to see these lights during the winter anyway… plus… I have the green faery…
Annie- My long touring motorcycle days are long over. I’m old… and my knee would probably warp halfway through Pennsylvannia from the elongated vibrations… although it is really tempting if the possibility of not being able to walk afterwards wasn’t there
Abba- I’ll be sure to let everyone know the full finalized itinerary so we can work out meet up details… and of course… I’ll be blogging the trip.
Ann- It’s amazing the things I find…
Laci- If I go there… I’m walking away with a patch of Bluegrass… do you think they’d arrest me?
Sheila- I was thinking the Arch… but again… I’m trying to avoid major metropolises unless they are RV friendly.
Angel- I’ll be sure to let you know!
Geeky- Actually… I’m blocking off three weeks… 21 days… Sunday to Saturday… although the actual dates are up for debate right now.

Yes I have a suggestion! Make that purple line go a little farther south at the start of your trip so I can have that bowl of cereal with you, lol!
Maybe this site will help with your trip - it should definitely help keep you out of large cities. http://www.rarevisionsroadtrip.com/
I’m pretty sure we have the world’s largest alligator and the world’s largest building shaped like an orange. So you definitely need to come down to Orlando, too.
You should stop in dairyland. Wisconsin Dells is full of delightfully kitschy and road-trip worthy attractions. The fudge alone is worth stopping in a state where people voluntarily strap pieces of foam rubber cheese to their heads.
Well if you do go, be sure to hit “no mans land” between indiana and kentucky. Nothing to see really but it is cool to not be in any state for about ½ a minute.
"Anyone have any suggestions??? “
Yeah, stop by Albuquerque on the way back!
I’ll fly to Boise and then travel with you back down to San Francisco… if you have room for me…
We can either go down 101 and hit Trees Of Mystery and Fogspinner… or we can come down thru the gold country…
either way… it’ll be fun!
OK !!! Here we go. It seems like you are already on your way through oregon south on 101, I highly recomend a stop at the tillamook cheese factory and pick up some fresh cherries in that area too. I cannot zoom in on that map but if you travel through Jackson, Wyoming then stop at Mountain High Pizza because its scruptious. If, for any reason you are going to be driving through Rock Springs , WY then let me know for sure because that’s where i live and i would love to take you to the local brewery or just a cup of joe and a bowl of cereal. Let me know
BlondeBlogger- Actually I was figuring on swinging by you on the way back… when I’m all road torn and stuff.
Sheila- Cool! Thanks for the link!
Avi- Well… Britt did offer to ride me give me a ride in her new car…
Melissa- I would SO want a cheese foam hat!
Da Duck- Oooh… can I decaler my own sovereign nation there?
Joe- That’s always a possibility!
Tori- Definitely! Worst comes to worse… you can ride on the roof!
Brandi- Thanks for the suggestions! Especially about the cherries! Where there are cherries… there is bound to be cherry pie…

If you come through Az at that time of year make sure to have lots of water we are usually blistering hot and a lot of people die traveling or hiking
At that time of year you will really want to find a lake or something if you can otherwise in an rv you will be stuck inside cause it’s too hot to do a whole heck of alot my son will only play outside for maybe 10 mins unless it’s close to sundown I’m talking cools down to 80 if we are lucky
