It took me awhile to fully quit. Shit does indeed happen
.
Oh, thank goodness you’re postponing until Monday. (Sorry, Mom.
)
You sweat like a pig? Wheee! *giggle*
PS - “Failure” is not the right term. More like, “self preservation”.
I read an article about weight loss the other day that started off with, “If you forget to brush your teeth one evening, do you throw away the toothbrush and never brush your teeth again?” I liked the analogy.
I think people in general tend not to forgive themselves when they fall off the wagon. So, forgive yourself and try again.
Have you considered cutting your cigarette consumption by half instead of quitting cold turkey? If you smoke 8, you smoke 4 instead. When you adapt to that, you cut back to 2, until you want none. It’s a method I read about while doing lung cancer research for my sister’s lung cancer blog.
But....
I never smoked so I really don’t know what works. And I imagine that what works for you may not work for others and vice versa.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment.
Also, on a unrelated note, I always wonder what Poppy’s shirt says.
"Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.”
It’s a reference to The Office (US), the episode when Jim is pretending to be Dwight.
But, ... heh, it’s just Dawg’s favorite picture of my boobs.
When I quit I used the patches and actually smoked for the first two weeks on the patches. Even though you’re not supposed to, that’s what worked for me. I eventually tapered off to no cigarettes and then did the entire 10 (or is it 12) weeks of the patches. Chantix worked for the bf, it also allowed him to taper off and just not smoke anymore when he was ready. You’ll get there Dawg it just takes practice. I’ll be smoke free three years in October and I’m glad I suffered through the first few weeks to get here!
I could quote Airplane but i won’t
Puff away--quit Monday.
HUGS
No, No, No.
You have to quit cold turkey. No nicotine gum, no nicotine patches, no nicotine period. You just have to quit (if you really want to, that is.)
Patches and gum don’t get rid of your nicotine habit, they just provide the nicotine in a different way. Your not killing your addiction with them.
If you seriously can’t quit cold turkey, I suggest going to your doctor and getting a prescription for Chantix. It doesn’t provide you with nicotine. It blocks the receptors in your brain from receiving the nicotine. So, even if you do fall off the wagon and have a smoke, your body doesn’t register the nicotine and you don’t have to start the whole process over again.
I know from experience, however, if you don’t really want to quit, there is not point in trying. But, if you are serious, cold turkey is the way to try it.
/smoked a pack a day of Marlboro (full flavor) for 11 years. Usually 2 packs per day on the weekend.
If there’s any time when you should be able to “make out” with yourself and forgive yourself for that, I think it’s this weekend.
Quitting something that you love and/or makes you happy should be difficult with all kinds of setbacks.
It should be epic. Makes you appreciate it more. Best of luck!
I don’t think it is a failure. Just a mere set back, if you are serious about quitting IT WILL HAPPEN!
(I probably quit 10x before it stuck. I have gone about 4 years with only a few lapses… And those involved alcohol and gambling, so basically I still smoke only when in Rome or some shit)
I chew the gum, still, so maybe that will work you sweaty beast.
I think you’re doing a really great job! Everyone falls off the wagon now and then. It’s whether or not you jump back on that counts. I’m planning on doing a face plant off the wagon on my Weight Watchers this weekend, but come Monday, all will be well with the world.
Hell, I fall off the diet wagon every single weekend. Hehe...i’m laughing because it’s true.
Seriously, I had to quit the smokes cold turkey...but sometimes that doesn’t work for people. Hang in there, Dawg...you can do it.
I had the same problem with the patches. The lozenges worked very well for me—but I can’t get off of them (I use about two, 2 mg lozenges a day).
Fall down three times, get up four…
i am proud of you for wanting to quit in the first place. don’t be too hard on yourself this weekend.
Jump right back on the patch! A ‘slip’ is ‘a cigarette’. Just don’t say “I have to finish the pack because I bought it!” You will set yourself back.
I quit during the summer and it is a cheap excuse* to say “the patch won’t stick”. Tip: Use rubbing alcohol or even hand sanitizer to wipe the target area. It will remove oils and the patch will stick better.Just let it dry before putting on the patch.
You can totally do this! I believe that you can.
*I’m just using tough love here. muah!
Don’t think of it as failure. Think of it as a hurdle you crossed and look at the strength you had to get past it. Learn from it. You did because you said you like the fact that when you wake up, you can actually breathe. That will make you stronger the next time. I have faith in you. Others do, too. My AS was human28. I think that’s appropriate somehow.
I smoked over 2 packs a day for 25 years and I’ve got emphysema to prove it.
The gum worked for me. It has a kind of peppery taste but it absolutely killed the craving. I used about 5 pieces a day (half a piece at a time) for a couple of months. It worked because it gave me something to reach for when I wanted a cigarette. The other thing is that it allows you to control the amount of nicotine you’re getting. With the patch, you can change the level, but each time you put one on, you get that amount of nicotine per day. (if that made sense)
I also used straws ... for some reason, breathing thru the straw helped curb the oral fixation thing that I got with cigarettes.
You can do it. Don’t give up.
OMG! I am needing to quit myself (really, I am sooo not kidding, check this out- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP_SdYXQSlE
Want to start a support group?? I have to have surgery soon and want to have quit by then. Let me know if there any way we can help each other out… my email is
The time will come when you’re just READY.
My thoughts & prayers are with you today Dawg...many many ((HUGS))
It’s been nearly 2 years since I quit. Things that helped? whyquit.org is chock full of great info to combat every excuse and every craving. Read read read and try again Monday. I’m here if you need to be talked down!
Hilly- Yes, shit does happen… but making out with myself doesn’t seem as enjoyable this time around… so it should be easier to lay down the sticks Monday.
Poppy- As if you didn’t know I sweat like a pig!
Lynda- I have actually decreased my smokes… and am not back to where I was. I used to be a 1.5-two packer. Right now I’m at half that. So quitting again should go a little easier.
Karl- Yeah… it’ll just take some more time… it’s only fair a solid 7 year habit takes a little longer to quit than a week.
Chris- You smoked with the patches? Wow. That’s seriously hardcore. I’ve heard great things about Chantix… but the cost is astronomical without a decent prescription plan which… I don’t really have. The patches worked for me last time I quit… but if they don’t work this time, I’ll just have to bite the bullet and get the Chantix.
Turnbaby- *PUFF* *PUFF*… by your command… *PUFF* *PUFF*
Bucky- My uncle was a cold turkey quitter… but then he switched to pipes so he still had something to puff on. I think cold turkey is dangerous though… not for me… for those AROUND me. Maybe if I was on a desert island, it would be easier.
Avitable- Yeah… this is true… which is why I’m not too worried about quitting again Monday. Just really needed it to get over the hump.
B.E. Earl- I like this idea of it being epic… kind of like a trilogy… and right now I’m at the middle movie. The Ciggy Strikes Back!
Mutt Royalty- If there is anything that would drive me back to smoking, it would be the gum. I find it horrible tasting… but now the 5 gum I love… so patch + 5 gum= success
bdgg_mcgee- Oh, I wouldn’t consider this a fall… more like a momentarily step off for a pit stop. Wait. Why is my leg broken? Oh noes! It was a fall!!!
Stephanie- Don’t get me wrong… I like the cold turkey. With mayo on rye. Really. Otherwise though… definitely not for me. All this talk of diets is making me hungry. I want some turkey.
Finn- I have to try the lozenges… not sure how they taste though. It’s funny, when you smoke taste isn’t such a bad thing… but when your not… oh holy hell do those taste buds repopulate!
Miss Britt- Damn straight.
Hellohahanarf- There just comes a point where it’s time… and my time has come… just not FULLY until Monday.
Metalmom- I
tough love.
Shelli- Yes, breathing is a good thing… I assure you of this.
Cap- I have to try the straw thing. I think the biggest issue is my oral fixation… once I can get past that… I should be okay.
Janelle- I haven’t thought about vlogging my quitting… maybe that is something I should do. Thanks for the idea!
Colleen- Thanks… but I think being kind to myself would mean actually quitting… so definitely Monday!
Tug- Yeah… I’m ready… willing… just need to work on being able
Karen- There are alot of good tips at WhyQuit.org… so yeah… going to read them again and give it another go. Thanks for the reminder!
“In each of us two natures are at war… the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, but one of them must conquer. In our own hands lies the power to choose. What we want most to be we are.” – Dr. Henry Jekyll
So this sweating-like-a-pig thing.. Is it cute like Babe? Or is it more like Ted Kennedy sweating?
