Is that *the* picture??
I love that poem by John McCrae. I had never seen Moina Michael’s addendum… very powerful.
This day reminds me of the grandfather I never knew, Parke (his first name; Mom’s dad). He was a pilot and his plane went down in England in WWII. He survived that crash to later die of (I believe) a brain aneurysm before I was born. I hope you get to ask my mom and/or grandmother all about him.
I will observe the moment of remembrance…
The time to show gratitude for our freedom should never run out as long as we have that freedom.
Beautiful poem. I’d forgotten about that. Thank you for reminding me.
I will take my moment at 3.
i appreciate the heads up on the national moment of remembrance. very appreciated.
I thought about posting this poem today. I was looking at US cemeteries in Europe and thinking how devastated some families were who lost loved one and could never visit their final resting place.
I have a lot of problems with Israel’s obsession with its military, but even the most anti-war anti-military person has to appreciate the eerie but respectful way people react when they hear the Memorial Day siren in Israel. Found this YouTube video:
I’d never seen the Moina Michael addendum before, and I have to be honest and admit that while I knew what Memorial Day was, I never knew the history behind it or how it was established.
Thanks for posting this--I’m a little less ignorant now because of it.
Poppy- Yes… that is THE picture. See… my shirt is actually white!
Finn- It is a very nice poem indeed… and fitting.
Hello haha narf- Yeah… I see it mentioned rarely.
Karl- No prob
Turnbaby- I thought the same thing… and all I can think about is how horrible it is to have to live without being able to go. I don’t think I could do it.
PITS- Israel’s survival depends on their military… and they are very well aware of that fact.
Girl, Dislocated- I like the Moina Michael addendum too… it sort of brings it full circle in my mind.
“In each of us two natures are at war… the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, but one of them must conquer. In our own hands lies the power to choose. What we want most to be we are.” – Dr. Henry Jekyll
