I think the worst thing anyone can do in this situation is to play Human Resources Manager with people who don’t work for you. I was in a Starbucks a few days ago and a customer, certainly not ill-intentioned, asked them if “this location” were closing. Basically, saying, “so, you losing your jobs?” These are people, some of whom are going to lose their jobs. It’s unfortunate, and I don’t think it’s anyone’s business but theirs and their company’s. We need to respect these people’s privacy.
It’s crap like this that makes me glad I don’t drink coffee. But I completely agree with you, if they weren’t so damned greedy a lot of those people wouldn’t have to start looking for new jobs.
But unlike someone else (I don’t know if he’s a regular commenter/friend and I don’t want to start pissing off me people..but damnit if I’m not opinionated) I think that the fact that you cared enough about those employees to go back there and inform them that they need to start looking for another job is awesome. If I was losing a job and the company I worked for wasn’t telling me about it I’d want someone to know so I could start looking for employment elsewhere.
I’ll send Dunkin’ Donuts .... with little files baked into them
Happy sawing!
I knew this was going to happen when they started opening stores across the road from each other.
I feel bad for all the employees who are going to lose their jobs. and hope that they will be able to find something - quickly!
Interesting that near me there is a mall that has not one, but two SB locations… just down the street from a third. And none of these is closing. I suppose it depends on the community.
I’m sure I’ve said this before...I have never been in a starbuck, tasted their coffee/latte/soymochawtfwithfoam.
When I was a kid, I worked in a DD. Seriously, it was not a shitty job...except for the money but how much do you need when you’re 17? And even though I can’t find one of their blueberry filled doughnuts anywhere these days, they’re still my first choice.
I thought a lot of Starbucks opened so close to each other because of great demand and customers bitching about long waits, etc. I’m sure I was wrong about that but I just never cared.
To tell you the truth, I know of 1 Starbucks around here and that would be way up on the drive in a freaking (get this) Walmart/Home Depot plaza. And the way to get into the starbucks is set up in such a way that if you want to make that quick right turn, chances are you’re gonna get rear-ended.
Now, when will greed topple Microsoft?

I don’t have an attitude problem, you have a perception problem
David- The last time I checked Starbux is a public company, and as I have already pointed out, they are closing stores because they only made $108.7 million dollars in profit. If they don’t have the cajones to tell their “partners”, then I’ll do it for them… and unmask them for the corporate mongers they are.
B.E. Earl- The Islip stores are closing, along with New Hyde Park and a few others… but I don’t think they cannibalized themselves like in mid-town.
Sarah- Yes, I think that considering the economy, the further ahead these people know, the better off they will be. What they actually do with this knowledge is up to them.
Cap- Oh please do! I
the Boston Creme.
Bucky- Yes… not the brightest bulbs in the bunch are they?
Fantastagirl- So do I… and its through no fault of their own.
Finn- I do find that surprising… although I do not find it surprising that there are none being closed in the Bronx. Possibly because there are none.
Miss Ann- I’m not surprised about where your local Starbux is, since they changed their demographic outside urban centers to aim at malls and shopping centers. In my mind, its a smart move… but not so smart to open an entirely separate store so close. Big lines and waits can be resolved by expanding existing stores… not investing in a second store so close to feed off the crowd you already have.
I think with Bill out of the picture… they have maybe a decade left. Sounds like a long time… but it really isn’t considering they’ve dominated for more than a decade.
“In each of us two natures are at war… the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, but one of them must conquer. In our own hands lies the power to choose. What we want most to be we are.” – Dr. Henry Jekyll
There is only so much coffee the American public can drink. You are soooo right about them going to far too fast! Now, when the economy is down and unemployment is up, Bux is going to contribute to it getting worse.
I don’t go get coffee often enough… BUT when I do I like options. Sometimes I get the ‘Bux, sometimes I get Dunn Bros, sometimes I just go to a mom and pop (which, really is where I like to go, to help the little guy but there aren’t enough anymore!)........
Hey - isn’t one of those on the list the Starbux I had water with YOU in?
Just think - they’re closing down our memories. *sigh*
Oh good!! None of the ones on the list is in my area. Which amazes me because I can go to about seven stores that are within ten minutes of my house. Most of them within five minutes. And some right across the street from each other.
And I am an admitted Starbucks addicted. My drug of choice right now is an iced, venti, soy, decaff, peppermint mocha. Makes me want to go get one right now!
Well fuck me sideways. The nearest store to my office is on the list of closing stores. I need to start liking Coffee Bean.
Damn you Starbucks for making me one of your junkies!
I only have 1 near me and it appears to be safe. The other 2 that we go to sometimes are okay as well. I do feel badly for the workers. That’s really sad.
I think the first Starbucks I was at was in Manhattan ... so it would have been five years ago. I’ll have a decaf at the Starbucks in our Target once in a great while; I think just twice.
I’m a grumpy old man. I don’t understand a person’s need to buy an overpriced, high calorie, coffee with odd names.
I’m sorry the jobs are being lost. But I’d rather drink Folgers.
I keep hoping that this cutback in the number of stores means that some of the smaller coffee shops that I love so much and have survived thus far, will have a better chance now. Here’s hopin’!
There is only so much coffee the American public can drink. You are soooo right about them going to far too fast! Now, when the economy is down and unemployment is up, Bux is going to contribute to it getting worse. Cool domain names.
