I’ve never had to make that decision for a child, but I helped make it for my grandmother.  And watched them make it for my Poppy.  And it does not appear any less agonizing when it’s the parent in the bed.

It is a horrible, horrible thing to have to DECIDE to end someone’s life, even if you know it’s better than the alternative.

That’s so sad.

It’s “not the same”, but to me it is… I had to make the decision for Little Kitty.  It still feels wrong to this day, even though she was begging me to do it.

My parents had to make that decision when my sister died. On the one hand, it is terribly sad. In the greater scheme of things, my folks thought maybe Laurianne would be able to help some other family. And that is what Laurianne would have wanted also.

It’s so very sad, and K seems so young.

When I lost my sister it was a wake up call for me. It has made all of the difference in my life.

I’m glad she had family that loved her and could help her not suffer. And they have given other families gifts of life.

You just never know...and it is so very heartbreaking.  Hopefully, some lives will be lived to the fullest thanks to K.  When my parents had to make this decision for my brother, I immediately got a living will - my parents and my daughter have copies, so hopefully they won’t have to make this decision; it will be made by me, with what I would want - help alleviate any guilt maybe?  I also made sure I was a donor...my thoughts & prayers are with you all.

I’m so sad to read about K. and what her family has been going through.  The past couple months have been a series of wakes, funerals, dreaded phone calls, and unexpected middle-of-the-night phone calls, and so you’d think I’d know what to say now, but I don’t. Our days are numbered, and so are those of the ones we love.  It’s an indisputable fact, yet people can be surprisingly resistant to the idea.  My family members think my efforts to get my affairs in order “just in case” are melodramatic.  While my risk for stroke, aneurysm, and organ rupture provided some of the impetus, the truth is that life is fragile with or without such risk factors.  There’s no logical reason to expect to live a long life or to have a loved one in your life indefinitely simply because there’s nothing obvious to indicate otherwise.  Young age, lack of medical problems, and a healthy lifestyle are a form of false advertising.  Sure, they suggest longevity, but they don’t guarantee even another minute in this world.  Acceptance of this fact will never make losing someone easy or even easier (it’s impossible to prepare for something like that), but I think it helps us make the most of the time we do have with our friends and family and to lead better lives.  Every single day I ask myself: if today is the end of the line for me, how useful has my life been?  Have I taken every opportunity presented to me to better the lives of the people I’ve come in contact with?  Have I made any useful contribution to even my small corner of society?
