Growing up, being the geek that I am, I was enthralled with the DragonLance series of books. I have, for the most part, kept my love for the book series up to the War of Souls. A few years ago at GenCon, before they filed bankruptcy and had the slew of legal problems they are now facing with Lucasfilm, they had a showing of Dragons of Autumn Twilight. That is the first book of the Chronicles Trilogy which launched the series to the prominence in the fantasy genre it enjoys today. Now this was an animated film, but still, I had high hopes.
So when I found out it was out on DVD, well I ordered it right away… on Tuesday to be exact. Thanks to Amazon I got it today, and was able to pop it in and get ready for its awesomeness…
It sucked.
In fact, I was so disappointed, I’m seriously thinking about reselling it. The animation is reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons… and then when the Dragons and Draconians show up, they are miraculously CGI. I hate that. I hated it in the Battletech/MechWarrior cartoon too. While they stayed pretty true to the storyline… but trying to cram 400 pages into 90 minutes is a mistake. Additionally… one of the greatest running mysteries of the books… “Who is Fizban?” gets answered before the end of the movie. I found that to be quite troublesome. I really just wish that some movie studio would option it, and make it right!
Have you ever so looked forward to something and been SO disappointed?
