Release The Kraken!!!

Release the Kraken!!!

I love that line.

I’m not quite sure why. Maybe it’s because the climax is coming. Maybe it’s because I like the name Kraken. Maybe it’s because of the seemingly neverending rotation of the commercial when Liam Neeson says it. For whatever reason I just love that line.

For those of you who have not yet ventured out to see the new Clash of the Titans, allow me to assure you that this remake isn’t starring you’re original Kraken

… who in all honesty looks like a guy dressed up in the Creature From The Black Lagoon suit.  Now if you’ve seen the original, you probably think you already know the meat of the story… and you’d be right. There were some definite changes in the story though which I think were for the better, making it fresh in today’s cinematic arena and delivering a true morality story that the original Greek tales were famous for.

Basically it warns against the consuming nature of vanity.

For when you allow vanity to consume you, consumption by the Kraken is inevitable.

Powerful stuff, right? Sure.

imageBut what about Bubo, the mechanical owl. In the original movie he is probably the best supporting character. In this version he is relegated to a 15 second appearance before being cast aside. I found this to be an outrage! I mean sure, I can overlook the fact that the Scorpinok fight was a little too long. I can see past the hunting of Medusa (who really looked kick ass) which seemed a little too short. I am totally cool with Pegasus being a black stallion, fine with Io being Perseus‘s love interest instead of Andromeda, and with Hades playing a more central role as opposed to Poseidon and even Zeus himself. I can even understand why the Kraken makes a seemingly short appearance, although I am actively campaigning for him to have his own feature… I’m thinking a romantic comedy co-starring Cloverfield as his love interest. But why on earth get rid of Bubo???

Overall I liked the movie. I thought it was worth the money I paid, even though I don’t think the 3-D effects made any difference to me one way or the other.

I just wanted more Bubo. Is that so bad?

I don’t think so.

Sunday Smorgashboard Edition 84: Eternal Links Are Yours Edition

Welcome to another fine edition of Smorgashboard Sunday!  This week is special because it falls on the Christian holiday of Easter, when Joshua Herman Christus (more commonly known as Jesus H. Christ) rose from the dead to forgive you of your sins and grant unto you eternal life everlasting in the Kingdom of Heaven at the right hand of the Father with bunnies, eggs, yadda yadda yadda. Of course, the Church is once again under fire across the globe for allegations of sexual abuse.

You would think the Church would be trying to repair their image, right?

Maybe they should reach out to the teen crowd?

Maybe they should find something that appeals to the youth of today! Maybe something along the same lines as those Twilight novels and movies all the middle aged mothers are panting over…

image

And thus this edition of the Sunday Smorgashboard is dedicated to the fact that these Eternal Links Are Yours… or at least until this this blog gets axed by the hosting service… for absolutely nothing!

Let’s get snackin’…

Finn has decided that the pettiness of others is ruining the blogosphere for her. I know what she means… because the petty judgmental words and hypocritical actions of others is one of the reasons I’ve stepped back from this end of the sphere as well… but I also completely agree with her that the good outweighs the bad. Now my whole reason for listing this post first isn’t for any other reason than to re-amplify her call to action: I hope that all of you will take a minute to examine your own online lives and join me in cutting out the nastiness and anger and leaving it to those that deserve it.

Poppy happily announced that @Twtrbean finally lost her fangs. While we thought this would result in her cannibalistic carnivorous appetite being quenched… well… not so much…

Dave2 calls electronic publishers out on their bullshit pricing of content for the iPad. I too will be getting an iPad, but I won’t be paying more for a digital copy than what I can get an actual copy for… because in that case I will just completely do without. My own personal effort on being greener and more economic

One of my favorite new reads, Lego Rebels, celebrated this Easter Holiday in unique jelly belly fashion

Avitable originally brought out Two Girls One Cup: A Pussy’s Reaction… but due to the doucheness of someone named Nick Albert the video got pulled. So instead its all about Pinball Kittay

LeSombre decided to blog about something very close to my heart… he blogged about me… and he also blogged about YOU! That post is a MUST read

And finally…

Seriously Sheila has a post about an organization called Marine Parents that runs a program called Purple Heart Family Support and is in the running for the Pepsi Refresh Initiative.  I think it’s a great cause to support that provides an important service to the families of those who lay their lives on the line for our freedoms and definitely worth a vote if you can kindly take a minute

Thus concludes this eternal edition of Smorgashboard Sunday! I hope all the believers out there have a great day looking for eggs and eating chocolate, and I hope all of my fellow heathens enjoy their pretzel nuggets while watching Clash of the Titans!

As a reward for feeding me with my internal thirst for reading materials… I designed this simple button for those who may want to display their Snacked upon status proudly:

Additionally… because I am beyond benevolent and loving contrary to what some people believe… here is the code for you to use with a permalink directly to this post.  So if your blog was snacked upon today, all you need to do is copy and past the code:

Smorgashboard Sunday is a weekly compilation of interesting posts, pictures, and videos that I have found within the 350+ feeds of personal or personal related blogs that I currently read.  Due to the volume of blogs and the 10-12 posts I limit myself to comment on, there may be times when posts that you author do not appear.  This is not to say that you did not have a good post, or an important post, or even a post I did not read because in all likelihood I did indeed read it.  This simply means that for that week(s) that you are excluded… well… I thought other posts were better choices for the Snacking.  This does not mean I don’t like you, I don’t love you, or that I don’t read you.  It just means that for that week(s), I chose other posts but there is always the possibility of next week.  Unless.

Unless you cry, whine, send me e-mail messages begging me to feature you, send e-cards with links to the posts you want linked, tell me how I don’t love you, tell me how I don’t like you, tell me how sad you are, tell me how I don’t read you even though you know I did because I commented that week, and/or try to muscle me with threats of large “goombas” paying a visit.  If you do any of that… then hold your breathe until you see yourself on the Smorgashboard again.  While your doing that… go get a white hat and get yourself some Smurfberry Pie ‘cause you’ll be blue before you see it.

Diary of Every Kid

image

It always comes back to the cinema, or so it seems.  DJ and I would go to the movies together all the time.  It was often our own private sanctuary from the world outside… where I was being demanded to provide for a broken household and where he was being demanded to become more independent quickly.  Once that piece of paper had been handed in, he could act his age… and I could act his age.  I tend to think that I won our more on that deal, but he did get to eat a large popcorn by himself… even if it took him two days to do it.

Yesterday, Poppy and I traveled out to New Jersey to take the Wolves to see Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  The book has a bit of special meaning, because I had bought it for the Professor back in 2007 soon after DJ was lost to us.  I’ll admit it, I read the book and really enjoyed it.  I like to think it helped him as he transitioned from one school to another and from being 1 of 5 to 1 of 4.

The movie itself was a really great translation from the book, including the drawing style that had made the book so rich and unique.  It’s the kind of film that I would rank up there with Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club.  It’s not really the Diary of a Wimpy Kid as much as it is the Diary of Every Kid, whether they want to admit it or not.

There was one part of the movie where I felt myself blown away by the philosophical truth in the statement.  In an attempt to remain spoiler free, it comes from the main characters mother when they are discussing choices and whether or not the main character should do something or not do something.

She says something along the lines of, “The choices you make are what defines you for the rest of your life.”

It’s so obvious.  So simple.  So true.

Add on “and will shape the lives of those around you” and there would be the true meaning of life.

If it weren’t already 42, that is.

And when I walked out of that theater it really had me thinking… and a wave of sadness descended upon me because I don’t think DJ realized how important he was to me.  I don’t think he realized how he shaped my life for the better.  I hope that the next time we meet, I’ll have the chance to not only tell him… but to show him.
