It seems that every blogger usually has two blogs. There is the “real” blog, and the “secret” blog. The “real” blog usually has their real name publicly known while the “secret” blog uses either a pseudonym or a secret identity as the author. The truth is, there is a good chance that the “secret” blog will not lead to the “real” blog and vice-versa for good reason. Therefore, the readers of the “secret” blog will only know the author by their “secret” identity and will associate them with it.
So the other day one of my friends let me in on another blog they were writing. Now I know that the blog they write on now uses a pseudonym… and I know their real name as well as an abbreviated version of their real name. So when I read this new blog… I saw that it was authored by their real proper first name… and it kind of bothered me. So then I got to thinking about pseudonyms and how we identify people… and I came to a startling conclusion.
If indeed I ever ended up in the throes of heated sexual passion with a fellow blogger, I probably would call them by their blogger name as opposed to their real name.
The way I look at it, is that although I would have met them and undoubtedly spent time with them, calling them by their real name, the fact is that I would be in a non-thinking and instinctive mode so the name I would call out would be the one I most associate with them subconsciously. I’ll even admit to the fact that when I did meet that one blogger in real life… I consciously had to remind myself of her real name. Its a name association thing… and I don’t think I’m the only person who does it. At least I hope not.
So do you think the associations you make with people online are able to overshadow them in real life?
